Three Wishes

I rubbed a lamp,
and a genie came out of it,
saying I had three wishes.
Three wishes?
Not enough
to ask everything
I ever wanted to ask.
So, okay.
For my first wish,
I want him back.
The genie declined.
"Something you never had
couldn't be yours again."
Okay.
For my second wish,
I want him—
not again,
just for the first time.
The genie declined that too.
Okay, last one.
For sure.

I asked for him again.
Not as my lover,
but as someone
I could keep close.
Again, he declined.
I asked why.
He replied,
"For something to be yours again,
it needs to be yours
in the first place.
And if you want something,
it should also
want you."
