The Day

I remember

Our third day in ninth grade

Desks scraping.
Airplanes fighting to fly.
Erasers hitting faces.
Pens dying in battle.

Tip-tap. Ma'am's heels.
Eyes scanning every corner.
Names on the blackboard.
Shouting.

A loud voice that followed—
"Change your seats!"
Collective sigh of strangers.
Still not ready to talk.

The desk slid next to mine.
The goofy smile so infectious.
Names exchanged.
Numbers did too.

Next I knew—
Hours of talking.
A loud voice that followed—
"Best friends? UGH."
