Zombie Fort / In the Deltoid / Cool Girl

zombie fort

you asked me if i wanted
to see your zombie fort

after we did it

and i was high
so i said sure

i had been chewing
on that sandwich

for far longer
than doing it took

that's not even a joke

i lost my virginity
to someone who never loved me

it sounds like i should,
but i don't regret it

i was madly in love with him
enough for the both of us

in the deltoid

the waiting area was sectioned off
for sick versus well, and i sat on the left.

the intercom sang about jesse's girl,
while the child sitting behind me
blew 42 raspberries.

they finally called my name.

his eyes were a piercing blue,
and he was too close to my age.

the backdrop was beige textured wallpaper
from 2000-and-something.

i scratched at the mostly gone polish
until it was completely gone from one nail.

my watch quit last night,
and fuck do i get it.

"...bloodcell...high...feeling unwell?"

i blinked.

i thought of that morning
when they stole my blood,
and the sticky georgia soup
masquerading as air,

and shook my head.

stacy came back in twenty-one minutes later
by my best guess. (i tried counting.)

she stabbed me in the deltoid
and i said thank you.

cool girl

"happy people don't smoke."
my friend said,
with a certainty
he hadn't yet aged out of.

he bums one,
"but boy, do we look cool."

i thought about
all of the stupid shit
we'd done that year

sitting on a dock at 4am
playing magic the gathering
before the cop showed up

sneaking through paige's
bedroom window

we'd just figured out
how to take out the screen

to go sit on a swing set
and talk about all of the

cool shit

we were going to do
when we were older

"i don't know what you're talking about."

inhale. cough.

"i'm having the time of my life."
