Sawaal — Question
This poem is a ghazal — a classical form of Urdu and Punjabi poetry in which each couplet (sher) ends with a repeated refrain (radif). The final couplet traditionally bears the poet's pen name (takhallus). "ਸਵਾਲ" was written in 2017.

Baṛā aukhā hoiā sawālāṁ de hathoṁ,
Haulī haulī muk giā vāṅ, sālāṁ de hathoṁ.
Rakh honslā, ih jag nāl hoī,
Mukke kaī Sikandar malālāṁ de hathoṁ.
Sānū mārnā koī saukhā nahīṁ sī,
Mar gae asīṁ tāṁ ḍhālāṁ de hathoṁ.
Sāḍī sadī roī baṛā is gall te,
Hoīāṁ hanerā mashālāṁ de hathoṁ.
Kis-kis te ilzām maṛh-maṛh ke lāvāṁ,
Bekasūr mariāṁ jalālāṁ de hathoṁ.
Kiveṁ koī sach huṇ "Goldie" likhegā,
Kalam khoī hanere ne ujālāṁ de hathoṁ.

The question grew too difficult at the hands of the questions themselves.
Slowly, I was worn away at the hands of the years.
Keep courage — this is the way of the world;
Many Alexanders have fallen at the hands of their own regrets.
It was never easy to kill us.
If we died, it was at the hands of our own shields.
Our century wept deeply over this truth:
Darkness came at the hands of the torches.
Upon whom should I keep placing blame after blame?
The innocent perished at the hands of blazing forces.
How will anyone write the truth now, Goldie?
The pen was lost — darkness stole it from the hands of light.
