CREATIVE NON-FICTION

Sobremesa

The world which is changing so fast every minute and second, where we all are busy in our lives, that we always have to be on our toes, afraid of being left in this fast changing and competitive world. There are some people living far away from their homes where they might not even have time for themselves, so they might have an excuse that they can't spend their time with their families, friends and the loved ones after the meal.

But what about those people who live with their families and friends who live nearby? What excuse do they have not to spend time with them?

Can't they spend some time and have a conversation, or maybe talk about their day, or it could be anything, any random thing to share, any story from school or college or office, or how they are feeling, or any simple silly thing to share. The hilarious thing about this is that they are busy with their phones, totally immersed in it, that they don't have the time to talk with the people around them.

It is like they are just living with them but not really living together, which seems to be more than enough, but they don't realize that this is the most priceless thing that they are missing.

Have they ever wondered how the people who are living far from their closed ones, they know how priceless it is, as they can only miss the moments they had with their families and friends. And some of us are living in regret in present, thinking what if they had spent more time with them, it would have been better.

Isn't it hilarious that we are regretting and taking it for granted? Think about those people who don't have anyone in this world to have a meal, to laugh, to talk with.

So it is better to be grateful and enjoy the meal and the after conversations, which not only give the moments to remember but also make you closer to your loved ones and deepen the bond in a way that we can't even imagine.

It's like Sobremesa, a Spanish word where people and their loved ones spend time talking on the table after their meal. It is like the moon which sometimes might hide and not be able to be seen, but it always has the time to talk with the stars and sky. So always cherish what you have while you can.

I hope we all will have our own Sobremesa moment. What is yours?

Author's Note This piece is about Sobremesa — a Spanish word for the time loved ones spend talking at the table after a meal. In a world moving so fast that we are always on our toes, we can be living alongside the people we love without really living together, too immersed in our phones to share the small, silly, priceless things. It is a reminder to be grateful and to cherish those after-meal conversations while we can. I hope we all have our own Sobremesa moment — what is yours?
